“The Couple with the Pitchfork: American Gothic from Easel to Icon” at Iowa State University
November 17 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
What transformed Grant Wood’s American Gothic from an Iowa painting into one of the most recognizable images in American art? Join award-winning art historian Wanda M. Corn, PhD for a lively exploration of the painting’s rise to fame and its many reinventions in popular culture.
Corn, Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor Emerita in Art History at Stanford University, will discuss the history and enduring cultural impact of American Gothic in a lecture based on her book, The Couple with the Pitchfork: American Gothic from Easel to Icon. This is Corn’s only Central Iowa stop on her national book tour.
The program is presented in honor of Lynette L. Pohlman, retired director of University Museums. Free and open to the public.
