Speakers Bureau: To “Educate” American Indians: An Early 20th Century History
September 1 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Join the Council Bluffs Public Library on September 1 for the presentation “To “Educate” American Indians: An Early 20th Century History” by Larry Skogen.
Larry Skogen has published the two-volume set To Educate American Indians: Selected Writings from the National Educational Association’s Department of Indian Education, 1900-1904 and 1905-1909. With these books he tells the history of this department specifically created for those educators “civilizing” America’s Native peoples and provides their selected complete papers delivered at annual NEA conferences. His lectures, enhanced with period photographs, help audiences learn about the history of Indian schools, the educators who worked at them, the curriculum they taught, and their beliefs about Native students and their work with them.
