Speakers Bureau Presents: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad

December 17 @ 4:00 pm 5:00 pm

Historian David Connon brings to life the remarkable story of Josiah Bushnell Grinnell—abolitionist, preacher, congressman, and founder of the town that bears his name. In this Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau presentation at the Stanton Public Library, Connon explores Grinnell’s courageous involvement in the Iowa Underground Railroad, where he and fellow townspeople aided at least 37 fugitive slaves before the Civil War. The program delves into moments of moral conviction, community conflict, and the visit of abolitionist John Brown, offering a vivid look at one of Iowa’s earliest battles over freedom and justice.
