November 6 @ 2:00 pm 8:00 pm

Speakers Bureau Event: Michael Vogt – Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home 1917–1918
The Adams County Historic Preservation Commission will host historian Michael Vogt for two programs on Thursday, November 6, 2025, exploring the pivotal role of Camp Dodge during World War I.

  • 2:00 p.m. – Southwest Valley High School Auditorium (904 8th Street, Corning, IA) – program for students and the public
  • 7:00 p.m. – Corning Community Center (601 6th Street, Corning, IA) – program for the public

Vogt, curator at the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, will share the story of how Camp Dodge grew from a small National Guard camp into Iowa’s largest military base. Through period photographs, maps, letters, and data, audiences will discover how over 37,000 Iowans left farms, towns, and cities to train for the First World War. For many, Camp Dodge became their first step away from home—and their “home away from home.”
