Ruth Suckow’s “Iowa Interiors”: A Statewide Centennial Celebration
September 26 @ 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Iowa Interiors, the debut short story collection by acclaimed Iowa author Ruth Suckow. Hosted at the Hearst Center for the Arts, this special afternoon event brings together scholars, writers, and artists from across the state to explore Suckow’s enduring legacy and her vivid portrayals of Iowa life.
The program will open with a live Readers Theatre performance of “A Great Mollie,” one of the collection’s most beloved stories. Dr. Jim O’Loughlin (University of Northern Iowa) will deliver a keynote on the historical, literary, and cultural significance of Iowa Interiors. Attendees will also hear from Iowa City artist Claudia McGehee, who will discuss her work illustrating the new Centennial edition of the collection, with artwork on display throughout the month.
A panel of contemporary Iowa authors—Laura Farmer, Marc Dickinson, and Keith Lesmeister—will round out the program with a discussion of Suckow’s storytelling, her depiction of Iowa communities, and the lasting impact of her work.
This free, public event offers a unique opportunity to engage with Iowa’s literary heritage and consider the power of storytelling in shaping our understanding of place, identity, and history.
