An Exploration of Baseball’s History in Iowa
May 27 @ 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Step into Iowa’s rich baseball history at this daylong public program hosted by the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation. Featuring a free exhibition of historian John Liepa’s extensive collection of Iowa baseball memorabilia—spanning the 1850s to today—visitors can explore rare artifacts, historic photographs, and stories of Iowa’s early players and pioneers. Knowledgeable volunteers, authors, and baseball historians will be on hand throughout the day to engage with visitors and share insights.
The evening concludes with a public lecture, “Baseball’s Origins: The Civil War’s Role in Spreading the Game to Iowa,” examining how the game grew during the Civil War era and took root across the state.
This engaging program invites audiences to connect with Iowa’s cultural history through artifacts, storytelling, and community conversation.
