SUMMARY:Traveling Exhibit: Barns of Iowa at the Lied Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Lied Public Library in April to view Humanities Iowa’s traveling exhibit Barns of Iowa by Michael Harker. \n\n\n\nThis collection of twenty 11 x 18 inch black and white photos captures the nostalgic beauty of barns as well as the enduring pride of the farmers who built them. Michael Harker began photographing these structures in 1993 with his rare artistic approach—shooting only one photo of each barn—one view of the facade\, interior\, or architectural detail that conveys its individual story. The actual barns are disappearing from Iowa at a rate of a thousand a year\, but Harker’s images visually preserve a foundation of the agrarian life—a piece of our Iowan identity. Featured by the Smithsonian Institution\, Barns of Iowa has been exhibited at the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in West Branch\, the Department of Agriculture building in Des Moines\, and at the State Historical Society of Iowa. Distinctive descriptions written by Loren Horton\, retired Senior Historian of the State Historical Society\, accompany the photos. Photographer Michael Harker was also a part of HI’s Speakers Bureau.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Promoting Peace\, Subverting Domesticity: Cookbooks Against War\, 1970-2010
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cedar Rapids Public Library for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Promoting Peace\, Subverting Domesticity: Cookbooks Against War\, 1970-2010. \n\n\n\nThis historical project analyzes peace activist cookbooks\, revealing how such texts ignite activism\, enable community identity for subcultures and adeptly subvert women’s domestic roles. The discussion this research features further extends our understandings of cookbooks and other “feminine” genres to connect with 21st-century trends in “new domesticity” and radical home economics that position the kitchen as the place where gender and politics ferment.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join the Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society as they host speaker Darcy Maulsby for the presentation “Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa.” \n\n\n\nWhite hoods and robes. Cross burnings. Parades of Ku Klux Klan members on the streets and fairgrounds of Iowa’s small towns and cities. It all seems improbable—and yet it happened repeatedly in countless rural and urban communities across Iowa in the mid-1920s.  While much of this history is shrouded in mystery\, and some has been lost\, a surprising number of stories\, photos and news clippings still exist\, when you know where to look. This powerful program takes you back in time to better understand why the “second coming” of the KKK occurred at this point in American history\, how the secretive group gained traction in Iowa\, why the KKK faded into history (at least in Iowa) prior to the Great Depression\, and what this history means for us today.
