SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: From Winterset to the World Series: Iowa's Hidden Role in Creating Modern Baseball
DESCRIPTION:Join Bricker-Price Block on April 16\, 2027 for “From Winterset to the World Series: Iowa’s Hidden Role in Creating Modern Baseball\,” a Speakers Bureau presentation by Tim Zarley. \n\n\n\nMost people assume baseball’s greatest stories happened in New York\, Chicago\, or Boston. Few realize how many of them ran through Iowa. In this presentation\, baseball historian and author Timothy Zarley reveals the remarkable Iowans who stood at the center of the most turbulent and transformative period in baseball history — the battle between the National and American Leagues that created the game we know today. \n\n\n\nFrom Fred Clarke of Winterset\, who managed the Pittsburgh Pirates to three consecutive pennants while doubters said he was too obtuse to win\, to the Robison brothers of Dubuque who controlled one of the National League’s most powerful franchises\, to an Iowa Senator from Davenport who introduced a bill to hang anyone caught playing baseball on Sunday — Iowa’s fingerprints are all over the early game. Drawing on primary source research from period newspapers and his award-nominated Baseball War Series\, Zarley brings these forgotten figures back to life and connects their stories to the birth of modern baseball.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on April 18\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau program “Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust” by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis deeply moving and powerful lecture-recital delves into the extraordinary and often haunting role of music during the Holocaust\, examining repertoire banned by the SS Kulturkammer and what type of music was performed in the camps and ghettos. Through the heartbreaking stories of Jewish composers whose lives were extinguished by the Nazi regime\, Dr. Beard exposes how the Nazis twisted music into a weapon of psychological cruelty\, even as prisoners reclaimed it as a lifeline. In the darkest of circumstances\, music became a fragile sanctuary: an act of courage\, identity\, and resistance against a world intent on erasing them.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: The Flute in Myth and Legend
DESCRIPTION:Join the Marshalltown Tuesday Musical Club on April 20\, 2027\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “The Flute in Myth and Legend” by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis lecture-recital explores the enduring power of myth and legend through music for the flute\, examining how composers across cultures and time periods have drawn inspiration from ancient stories\, folklore\, and archetypal characters. Myths—whether rooted in Greek antiquity\, Celtic folklore\, or broader oral traditions—have long served as vessels for shared values\, fears\, and human questions\, and music offers a uniquely evocative way to retell these stories without words. Through live performance and engaging commentary\, the program traces how legendary figures\, supernatural beings\, and heroic narratives are translated into musical character\, color\, and gesture. Audiences are invited to consider how composers use melody\, rhythm\, and timbre to suggest transformation\, conflict\, fate\, and wonder\, while also exploring the historical and cultural contexts that gave rise to these works.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Birdwatcher-in-Chief: Theodore Roosevelt and America's Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join the Dayton Public Library on April 21\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Birdwatcher-in-Chief: Theodore Roosevelt and America’s Birds” by Duane Jundt. \n\n\n\nTheodore Roosevelt’s reputation as the foremost conservationist president is assured and his hunting exploits are the stuff of legend. What is less well known is that Roosevelt was an avid birdwatcher and a champion of preserving America’s threatened bird species and habitats. And Roosevelt was no late comer to birding; he enjoyed observing and cataloging birds as a boy and he never recovered from this addiction. As President\, Roosevelt acted decisively on behalf of America’s birds\, but his interaction with birds also had a marked effect on him. This talk will explore the role birds and birding played in Roosevelt’s life.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on April 25\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad” by David Connon. \n\n\n\n“Preacher\,” “congressman\,” “negro-stealer”: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was called all of those things during his life. He was called a negro-stealer because he participated in the Iowa Underground Railroad. J.B. Grinnell and other Grinnell residents helped at least 37 fugitive slaves who passed through their town before the Civil War. But some residents opposed this work. David Connon will tell a story of racism\, noble actions and conflict. He will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to Grinnell\, and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public school.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join the West Des Moines Historical Society as they host speaker Darcy Maulsby for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa.” \n\n\n\nWhite hoods and robes. Cross burnings. Parades of Ku Klux Klan members on the streets and fairgrounds of Iowa’s small towns and cities. It all seems improbable—and yet it happened repeatedly in countless rural and urban communities across Iowa in the mid-1920s.  While much of this history is shrouded in mystery\, and some has been lost\, a surprising number of stories\, photos and news clippings still exist\, when you know where to look. This powerful program takes you back in time to better understand why the “second coming” of the KKK occurred at this point in American history\, how the secretive group gained traction in Iowa\, why the KKK faded into history (at least in Iowa) prior to the Great Depression\, and what this history means for us today.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: The Banned Play On: Music by Banned\, Censored\, and Persecuted Composers
DESCRIPTION:Join the Urbandale Public Library on September 9\, 2027\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “The Banned Play On: Music by Banned\, Censored\, and Persecuted Composers” by flutist Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis program explores the lives and music of composers whose voices were silenced\, suppressed\, or displaced through persecution\, censorship\, and exile. Emerging from an ongoing commitment to socially engaged music-making\, the project examines how political ideology\, race\, gender\, religion\, sexual identity\, and nationalism have shaped—and often curtailed—the careers of composers across the 20th and 21st centuries. Drawing on extensive original research that has uncovered nearly 900 works for flute by affected composers\, the lecture contextualizes music created under conditions of oppression\, war\, and forced migration. While some works reflect resistance\, grief\, or outrage\, others reveal the quiet persistence of artistic expression despite extraordinary circumstances. Together\, they illuminate the diverse ways composers responded to trauma\, censorship\, and displacement. \n\n\n\nThe program highlights both familiar figures—such as composers exiled during World War II or marginalized during political purges—as well as lesser-known artists whose music has largely disappeared from the standard repertoire. Special attention is given to forgotten works for flute and piccolo\, including pieces written under severe material and political constraints\, often resulting in innovative instrumentation and unique musical language. Beyond musical analysis\, the lecture situates these compositions within broader historical and cultural frameworks\, examining how music has functioned as resistance\, preservation of identity\, and testimony. By engaging with these stories\, audiences are invited to consider the enduring relationship between art and power\, the human cost of cultural repression\, and the importance of recovering marginalized voices.
