SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Suffrage and WWI: The Iowa View
DESCRIPTION:Join the Davenport Public Library on March 27\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Suffrage and WWI: The Iowa View” by author Ann Hanigan Kotz. \n\n\n\nThe program begins with the story of Iowa’s suffrage movement\, examining the long struggle for women’s right to vote. Through stories of both well-known and lesser-known Iowa heroes\, Ann reveals the sacrifices and contributions of Iowans during the conflict. She also examines conditions on the home front\, including the fear\, suspicion\, and discrimination faced by many German Americans living in Iowa during the war years. \n\n\n\nThe presentation concludes with a personal connection as Ann shares how her own family was touched by the events of World War I\, bringing this fascinating chapter of history close to home.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: All Aboard! Relive Iowa's Inspiring Orphan Train Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Join Iowa author and historian Darcy Maulsby at the Prairie City Public Library for a look at Iowa’s orphan train heritage. \n\n\n\nFrom 1854 to 1929\, a network of “orphan trains” relocated as many as 300\,000 children from orphanages in cities like Boston and New York City to at least 39 states. Iowa was among the top states for many of these kids who started new lives in the Midwest and beyond. In fact\, roughly 8\,000 to 10\,000 of these needy children were brought to Iowa to live with both farmers and town residents. For many\, this was a story of second chances\, hope and resilience. Audiences will be touched by the incredible stories of some of these orphan train riders and how their lives evolved after moving to Iowa.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Iowa's Prohibition & Bootlegging Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Join Iowa historical fiction writer Ann Hanigan Kotz for “Iowa’s Prohibition & Bootlegging Legacy” at the Ackley Public Library\, an engaging journey through the eight times the state of Iowa limited or banned alcohol and the determined Iowans who made it happen. \n\n\n\nAnn begins with a sweeping overview of Iowa’s complicated relationship with alcohol before plunging into the dramatic stories that defined the era: the tarring of an official by the Iowa City Beer Mafia\, the shocking murder of a pastor in Sioux City\, and the rumrunning operations that made Templeton infamous for its rye whiskey. Along the way\, you’ll gain insight into why Iowa became a whiskey making powerhouse during Prohibition and learn the how and where behind the state’s thriving illegal enterprise. \n\n\n\nAnn concludes by connecting past to present\, exploring the modern echoes of today’s underground whiskey scene.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: From Winterset to the World Series: Iowa's Hidden Role in Creating Modern Baseball
DESCRIPTION:Join Bricker-Price Block on April 16\, 2027 for “From Winterset to the World Series: Iowa’s Hidden Role in Creating Modern Baseball\,” a Speakers Bureau presentation by Tim Zarley. \n\n\n\nMost people assume baseball’s greatest stories happened in New York\, Chicago\, or Boston. Few realize how many of them ran through Iowa. In this presentation\, baseball historian and author Timothy Zarley reveals the remarkable Iowans who stood at the center of the most turbulent and transformative period in baseball history — the battle between the National and American Leagues that created the game we know today. \n\n\n\nFrom Fred Clarke of Winterset\, who managed the Pittsburgh Pirates to three consecutive pennants while doubters said he was too obtuse to win\, to the Robison brothers of Dubuque who controlled one of the National League’s most powerful franchises\, to an Iowa Senator from Davenport who introduced a bill to hang anyone caught playing baseball on Sunday — Iowa’s fingerprints are all over the early game. Drawing on primary source research from period newspapers and his award-nominated Baseball War Series\, Zarley brings these forgotten figures back to life and connects their stories to the birth of modern baseball.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on April 18\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau program “Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust” by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis deeply moving and powerful lecture-recital delves into the extraordinary and often haunting role of music during the Holocaust\, examining repertoire banned by the SS Kulturkammer and what type of music was performed in the camps and ghettos. Through the heartbreaking stories of Jewish composers whose lives were extinguished by the Nazi regime\, Dr. Beard exposes how the Nazis twisted music into a weapon of psychological cruelty\, even as prisoners reclaimed it as a lifeline. In the darkest of circumstances\, music became a fragile sanctuary: an act of courage\, identity\, and resistance against a world intent on erasing them.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: The Flute in Myth and Legend
DESCRIPTION:Join the Marshalltown Tuesday Musical Club on April 20\, 2027\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “The Flute in Myth and Legend” by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis lecture-recital explores the enduring power of myth and legend through music for the flute\, examining how composers across cultures and time periods have drawn inspiration from ancient stories\, folklore\, and archetypal characters. Myths—whether rooted in Greek antiquity\, Celtic folklore\, or broader oral traditions—have long served as vessels for shared values\, fears\, and human questions\, and music offers a uniquely evocative way to retell these stories without words. Through live performance and engaging commentary\, the program traces how legendary figures\, supernatural beings\, and heroic narratives are translated into musical character\, color\, and gesture. Audiences are invited to consider how composers use melody\, rhythm\, and timbre to suggest transformation\, conflict\, fate\, and wonder\, while also exploring the historical and cultural contexts that gave rise to these works.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on April 25\, 2027 for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad” by David Connon. \n\n\n\n“Preacher\,” “congressman\,” “negro-stealer”: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was called all of those things during his life. He was called a negro-stealer because he participated in the Iowa Underground Railroad. J.B. Grinnell and other Grinnell residents helped at least 37 fugitive slaves who passed through their town before the Civil War. But some residents opposed this work. David Connon will tell a story of racism\, noble actions and conflict. He will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to Grinnell\, and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public school.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join the West Des Moines Historical Society as they host speaker Darcy Maulsby for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa.” \n\n\n\nWhite hoods and robes. Cross burnings. Parades of Ku Klux Klan members on the streets and fairgrounds of Iowa’s small towns and cities. It all seems improbable—and yet it happened repeatedly in countless rural and urban communities across Iowa in the mid-1920s.  While much of this history is shrouded in mystery\, and some has been lost\, a surprising number of stories\, photos and news clippings still exist\, when you know where to look. This powerful program takes you back in time to better understand why the “second coming” of the KKK occurred at this point in American history\, how the secretive group gained traction in Iowa\, why the KKK faded into history (at least in Iowa) prior to the Great Depression\, and what this history means for us today.
