He will detail the experiences of an Iowan during the conflict. During and after the presentation\, the audience is encouraged to ask questions and engage in a dialogue with the “soldier\,” who stays in character. The speaker will bring an artifact display and full electronic Civil War roster of all men who served in and from Iowa. It can be searched by name\, city\, county and/or birthplace.

DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join the Des Moines Art Center in welcoming artist Jeffrey Gibson as the featured speaker of the annual Fingerman Lecture series. Gibson (American\, born 1972) is an interdisciplinary artist\, curator\, and convener celebrated for his painting\, installation\, video\, and performance work. For over two decades\, he has explored how language\, pattern\, and music construct meaning\, synthesizing Indigenous and Western traditions through vibrant color\, complex patterning\, and layered sound. \n\n\n\nA member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent\, Gibson represented the U.S. at the 2024 Venice Biennale with his acclaimed exhibition\, “the space in which to place me\,” which debuted at The Broad in Los Angeles in May 2025. He was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2025 Genesis Facade Commission and will present new work for the historic exterior this September. His work is held in major collections including MoMA\, the Whitney\, and the National Gallery of Art. He lives in New York’s Hudson Valley and is an artist-in-residence at Bard College. \n\n\n\nThe Fingerman Lecture series at the Art Center is made possible through generous gifts by Lois and the late Dr. Louis Fingerman. Based on her family experience in Coon Rapids\, Liz recounts the history of agricultural development in Iowa\, from early settlement through the fabulous mid-century explosion of farm productivity\, based on the hybrid seeds\, machinery\, fertilizers and livestock technologies promoted by her grandfather. Liz tells how it came to pass that Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and his family visited the Garst family in 1959\, and recalls fun stories from her personal memories as an 8-year-old participant. Embedded in the entertaining story are history and economics lessons and a powerful message about the ability of an individual to make a difference.

DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\n\n\nOne of our nation’s most iconic First Ladies\, Mamie Eisenhower endured and triumphed through adversities through her extraordinary life. Mamie held numerous roles in her lifetime and witnessed–and shape–incredible history along the way. Few know\, however\, that Nancy is an Iowa heroine and that her creator was Mildred Augustine of Ladora. Nancy Drew and Mildred Augustine are extraordinary role models for Iowa girls and boys\, women and men. An academic pioneer (the first woman to earn a master’s degree from the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism)\, Augustine earned six airplane pilots’ licenses\, including one for sea-planing\, wrote 130 stories for young people and wrote her newspaper column\, “On the Go\,” until her death at age 98. Augustine wrote in the first Nancy Drew volume\, The Secret of the Old Clock\, published in 1930\, “Nancy Drew took pride in the fertility of her state and saw beauty in a crop of waving green corn as well as in the rolling hills and the expanse of prairie land.” This program\, with lots of images\, is meant to inspire young and old.

She is the author of three poetry books and a spoken word album and is published in many journals. As a multi-slam champion\, teaching artist\, workshop leader\, and more\, Kelsey is on a mission to show others two things: 1. You can live the life you dream\, and 2. It does get better. \nAbena Sankofa Imhotep\n \nAbena Sankofa Imhotep is an award-winning author\, transformative thought leader\, and the Executive Director of Sankofa Literary & Empowerment Group which creates spaces for lifelong learning that center the literature and scholarship of Black authors. Leading conversations around racial equity and organizational awareness around the country\, Abena is an active advocate for education\, justice\, and humanitarianism. \nAbena has presented human rights papers on social impact & responsibility and strategies for achieving racial justice at the Nelson Institute Global Citizen Forum\, the Iowa Human Rights Research Conference\, and University of Notre Dame Kroc Institute. Abena founded Sankofa Literary Academy in 2021 to expand children’s access to diverse books across the United States. Additionally\, Abena serves on several boards of directors\, is an International Relations major at Drake University\, a TEDx speaker\, and author of the beloved children’s book\, Omari’s Big Tree and the Mighty Djembe.
