DESCRIPTION:Join the West Des Moines Historical Society as they host speaker Darcy Maulsby for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa.” \n\n\n\nWhite hoods and robes. Cross burnings. Parades of Ku Klux Klan members on the streets and fairgrounds of Iowa’s small towns and cities. It all seems improbable—and yet it happened repeatedly in countless rural and urban communities across Iowa in the mid-1920s.  While much of this history is shrouded in mystery\, and some has been lost\, a surprising number of stories\, photos and news clippings still exist\, when you know where to look. This powerful program takes you back in time to better understand why the “second coming” of the KKK occurred at this point in American history\, how the secretive group gained traction in Iowa\, why the KKK faded into history (at least in Iowa) prior to the Great Depression\, and what this history means for us today.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Urbandale Public Library on September 9\, 2027\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “The Banned Play On: Music by Banned\, Censored\, and Persecuted Composers” by flutist Dr. Christine Beard.  \n\n\n\nThis program explores the lives and music of composers whose voices were silenced\, suppressed\, or displaced through persecution\, censorship\, and exile. Emerging from an ongoing commitment to socially engaged music-making\, the project examines how political ideology\, race\, gender\, religion\, sexual identity\, and nationalism have shaped—and often curtailed—the careers of composers across the 20th and 21st centuries. Drawing on extensive original research that has uncovered nearly 900 works for flute by affected composers\, the lecture contextualizes music created under conditions of oppression\, war\, and forced migration. While some works reflect resistance\, grief\, or outrage\, others reveal the quiet persistence of artistic expression despite extraordinary circumstances. Together\, they illuminate the diverse ways composers responded to trauma\, censorship\, and displacement. \n\n\n\nThe program highlights both familiar figures—such as composers exiled during World War II or marginalized during political purges—as well as lesser-known artists whose music has largely disappeared from the standard repertoire. Special attention is given to forgotten works for flute and piccolo\, including pieces written under severe material and political constraints\, often resulting in innovative instrumentation and unique musical language. Beyond musical analysis\, the lecture situates these compositions within broader historical and cultural frameworks\, examining how music has functioned as resistance\, preservation of identity\, and testimony. By engaging with these stories\, audiences are invited to consider the enduring relationship between art and power\, the human cost of cultural repression\, and the importance of recovering marginalized voices.
