DESCRIPTION:Riding the Rails to Hero Street by Emmy award-winning filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films will be presented on Wednesday\, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Davenport Public Library-Fairmount Street Branch\, 3000 N Fairmount St.\, Davenport\, Iowa. The program is free to the public and sponsored by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission and Davenport Public Library.  A discussion will follow the 27-minute film. \nRiding the Rails to Hero Street\, part one in the Rundles’ Hero Street documentary series\, tells the story of the immigrants’ journey from Mexico to Cook’s Point in Davenport\, Holy City in Bettendorf\, Iowa\, and the Chicago\, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad train yards and boxcar homes in Silvis\, Illinois.  The families experienced both acceptance and discrimination in their new communities. Around the time of the great depression\, the families were removed from the rail yards and some moved box cars or built new homes on 2nd Street in Silvis.  Only a block and a half long\, the street lost six young men in World War II and two in the Korean War\, more than any other street in America.  Hero Street\, as it is now known\, has provided over 150 service members since World War II. \nThe multi-part Hero Street documentary series will explore the personal and family sagas behind the eight heroes and tell the compelling true story of an ongoing struggle to memorialize Tony Pompa\, Frank Sandoval\, William Sandoval\, Claro Soliz\, Peter Masias\, Joseph Sandoval\, Joseph Gomez and John S. DESCRIPTION:“Preacher\,” “congressman\,” “negro-stealer”: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was called all of those things during his life. He was called a negro-stealer because he participated in the Iowa Underground Railroad. J.B. Grinnell and other Grinnell residents helped at least 37 fugitive slaves who passed through their town before the Civil War. But some residents opposed this work. David Connon will tell a story of racism\, noble actions and conflict. He will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to Grinnell\, and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public school.

DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark in Iowa“Lewis and Clark in Iowa” begins with the story before the expedition: the sale of the Louisiana Purchase to the United States. Tracing the 1803 course from Elizabeth\, Pennsylvania to St. Charles\, Missouri\, Shurr discusses the background of the many “players” of the expedition including York\, the engages and Seaman. Moving up the Missouri River focus shifts to events occurring in Iowa such as the death of Sgt. Floyd. An accompanying PowerPoint presentation shows the keelboat and the pirogues with actual photos taken in St. Charles and at the Onawa Lewis and Clark State Park. The audience will be exposed to the many “firsts” that occurred in Iowa\, the true peril of this journey and the return of Lewis and Clark to civilization at journey’s end.

DESCRIPTION:Thousands of towns and communities were established during Iowa’s pioneer and railroad era. In some instances\, they were small towns built around the time of the height of a coal industry that just could not thrive while others supplemented the needs of the countless farmers\, and still others were established for very different reasons. Many existed for a few years\, some slowly faded away over time\, and a few never existed except as “paper” towns. Regardless of why they originated or why they diminished\, each community has its own unique story. Towns are truly windows to our past and have helped form the history of our state. Discovering and learning about them helps to keep their names and memories from oblivion. Take a tour around Iowa exploring a sampling of these idiosyncratic communities in photographs and stories.

Many worked at stations in the late nineteenth century\, including Iowa’s own Kate Shelley. There is no question that by 1900 women had become an integral part of the railroad’s labor force. During World Wars I and II\, women expanded their roles and worked in shops\, on trains\, and repairing track. This program also includes profiles of the women holding government offices and high corporate positions in the industry in more recent years. *Photos will accompany the presentation when projector facilities are available.
