SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector
DESCRIPTION:Join the German American Heritage Center for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector” by Mary Swander. \n\n\n\nMary Swander will discuss her writing process and the research that went into her new drama called Coop. She will explain object theatre and why she embraced it for this work. She will recount how she got the original idea for the show and the choices she made to bring the story to the stage\, how both the set and the script were an act of discovery. She will also provide background on the Amish and the history of their stance of non-violent resistance throughout their history. The bulk of the play was mainly drawn from fictionalized oral histories from the Kalona area. Swander will discuss her connection to her neighbors and the help they provided\, including the Mennonite quartet who sang the hymns in the show. Audience members may ask questions or relate their own personal or family C.O. experiences.

SUMMARY:Traveling Exhibit: David Plowden's Iowa at the Sioux City Art Center
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Sioux City Art Center in May-September 2026 to see David Plowden’s Iowa\, a traveling exhibit of David Plowden’s photography from Humanities Iowa. \n\n\n\nDavid Plowden’s Iowa\, a series of black and white photographs shot over four decades\, takes a sharp and expansive view of Iowa’s rural communities and agricultural landscapes\, including barns\, grain elevators\, rail lines\, businesses\, highways\, and the remains of once-busy towns. Since Plowden rarely captures any of the people who live in these towns\, the images feel both familiar and slightly estranged. Plowden doesn’t editorialize. He doesn’t frame his subjects with nostalgia or critique. He sees what is there and photographs it with quiet conviction. The 64 photographs in the series create a portrait of Iowa that’s plainspoken\, layered\, and a little uncanny. You get the sense that change is not the same as progress. It is one person’s history of a place\, but it’s also about us: what we notice\, what we overlook\, and what lingers after we leave.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Newton Public Library for the presentation AI and the Human Future by Scott Samuelson. \n\n\n\nThis presentation focuses on the big moral and political issues surrounding artificial intelligence. Who is responsible when AI screws up? Can AI be moral? What does the future of humanity hold as we move through this technological revolution? Neither pro-AI nor anti-AI\, this presentation is intended to get people thinking more deeply about the central issues raised by the new technology and how they might relate to it in their own lives.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Working with the Enemy
DESCRIPTION:Join the Adel Public Library on June 2\, 2026 for this presentation by speaker Chad Timm. \n\n\n\nWorking with the Enemy: German\, Italian and Japanese Prisoners of War in Iowa during the Second World WarAs part of a relatively quiet and under-publicized government program\, thousands of enemy soldiers invaded Iowa in 1943. With the hugely successful 1942 Allied campaign against Adolf Hitler’s vaunted Afrika Corps in North Africa\, the number of enemy prisoners of war (POW) needing interment grew dramatically. Great Britain\, no longer able to accommodate the increasing number of POWs\, looked to the United States for help. Helping with the detainment of enemy POWs made sense\, as American cargo vessels were returning home after delivering war materials with empty hulls. \n\n\n\nWhat began as an experiment in isolated locations in the south and southwest eventually led to more than 500 camps and 400\,000 enemy soldiers interned in the United States\, including two camps in the state of Iowa. Due to a severe shortage of agricultural laborers coupled with increased War Food Administration quotas for farm goods\, Iowa’s farmers needed help doing their part to assist the United States in winning the war. \n\n\n\nThis talk will focus on the creation of two POW camps in Iowa during the Second World War: one in the Northern Iowa town of Algona and one in the Southwestern Iowa town of Clarinda. Some of the topics discussed will be life in a prisoner of war camp\, community relations\, the POW labor program\, branch camps in more than 30 Iowa communities and the arrival of Japanese prisoners at Camp Clarinda in early 1945. Camp Clarinda was one of only two camps in the country to house Japanese soldiers. The story of POW interment in Iowa is a fascinating story of Iowans being confronted by the enemy: an enemy they not only needed to help them meet their wartime goals\, but also challenged them to find their humanity.
