DESCRIPTION:Join DeWitt Community Library for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector” by Mary Swander. \n\n\n\nMary Swander will discuss her writing process and the research that went into her new drama called Coop. She will explain object theatre and why she embraced it for this work. She will recount how she got the original idea for the show and the choices she made to bring the story to the stage\, how both the set and the script were an act of discovery. She will also provide background on the Amish and the history of their stance of non-violent resistance throughout their history. The bulk of the play was mainly drawn from fictionalized oral histories from the Kalona area. Swander will discuss her connection to her neighbors and the help they provided\, including the Mennonite quartet who sang the hymns in the show. Audience members may ask questions or relate their own personal or family C.O. experiences.

DESCRIPTION:Join the NAACP Sioux City Branch on February 17th at 7 p.m. for a special narrated concert honoring the life and legacy of Coretta Scott King. Often remembered as the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Coretta Scott King was a gifted concert soprano\, civil rights leader\, and lifelong advocate for peace and justice in her own right. \n\n\n\nWritten by Timothy Steele of the New England Conservatory of Music\, this moving program weaves Coretta’s own words with music she loved and performed—including spirituals\, hymns\, gospel\, Civil Rights songs\, and art songs. Performers include three opera singers\, the Morningside University Choir\, the Gospel Community Choir\, and pianist Timothy Steele. \n\n\n\nA post-concert conversation with featured performers and scholars will follow\, inviting audience members to reflect and engage in dialogue about Coretta Scott King’s life\, music\, and enduring impact. \n\n\n\nThis program was funded in part by Humanities Iowa\, The National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Federation of State Humanities Councils as a Humanities Iowa Mini Grant recipient.

The bulk of the play was mainly drawn from fictionalized oral histories from the Kalona area. Swander will discuss her connection to her neighbors and the help they provided\, including the Mennonite quartet who sang the hymns in the show. SUMMARY:State Historical Society of Iowa Presents Iowa History 101: Sand and Silence: The Art of Andrew Clemens of McGregor\, Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Event Details \n\n\n\nAndrew Clemens (1857-1894) created sand art in bottles that draw reactions of astonishment and disbelief. Deaf by the age of 6\, he had a challenging early childhood. Growing up in a supportive family and community\, he persevered. In his youth\, he began creating sand art that he sold from his home and local shops in  McGregor\, Iowa\, a booming town in the late 19th century. In time\, he developed his craft to an extraordinarily high degree using simple tools to carefully position grains of naturally colored sand inside glass bottles. His works were an inspiration to other artists that tried to follow in his footsteps only to find they could not match the master of the craft. His remarkable story along with dozens of photos of his works will be presented and discussed during this program. \n\n\n\nRoy Sucholeiki is the author of the “The Sand Art Bottles of Andrew Clemens\,” 2015 and 2nd Edition (2025)\, McFarland Books \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is required to attend this program.
