SUMMARY:Beth Hoffman: Bet the Farm
DESCRIPTION:Beth Hoffman was living the good life: she had a career as a journalist and professor\, and a comfortable home in San Francisco. Yet in her late 40s\, she and her husband decided to leave the big city and move to his family farm in Iowa—all for the dream of becoming a farmer\, to put into practice everything she had learned over decades of reporting on food and agriculture. There was just one problem: money. \nThe economics of agriculture are shocking: half of America’s two million farms made less than $300 in 2019. Between rising land costs\, ever-more expensive equipment\, and the growing uncertainty of the climate\, farming today is a risky business. For many\, simply staying afloat is a constant struggle. Even for those with a decent nest egg and access to land\, like Beth and John had\, making ends meet at times seems impossible. Bet the Farm is a first-hand account of the perils of farming today and a personal exploration of more just and sustainable ways of producing food. \nHoffman can present about her book\, visit with book clubs\, or speak to groups about relevant topics like farmland transition\, the state of Iowa agriculture and how farms can be more economically viable.

SUMMARY:CultureALL's Open Book Presents: Abe Goldstein and James Hmohmo
DESCRIPTION:Pork-eating Jew\nAbe Goldstien \n \nAbe Goldstien was born and raised in an orthodox Jewish community in Rochester\, New York. He moved to Des Moines in 1969 to pursue an education and career in advertising. During college at Drake University – and for several years later – Abe had very little to do with Des Moines’ Jewish community or the religious customs of his youth. It wasn’t until he started to perform Yiddish (Eastern European Jewish) music on his accordion that he reconnected with his heritage. Today\, Abe is the leader of the Java Jews\, Iowa’s only klezmer music band. He’s also a CultureALL Ambassador who talks to children and adults about keeping alive their unique family customs and traditions\, no matter how strange they are. \n“I grew up in an orthodox Jewish home\, but I pretty much abandoned the religious customs of my upbringing once I moved to Des Moines for college. Many years later\, I became friends with a local chassidic rabbi. He connected me with my roots by describing me as a ‘Goldstien Jew’ – a title I am proud to carry.” \n‍ \nSeven Skins\nJames Hmohmo \n \nJames grew up in a large Burmese family and now lives in the United States. He is starting his own family as a newly married man. He is a leader in the Mara community of Burmese refugees\, publishes articles in his own language\, and is employed as a case worker for the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Des Moines. \n“My story is about being a Burmese refugee who lived in Malaysia while in transit to America. My father taught me the lesson of resilience through his experience as a prisoner of war under a dictatorship. From starting work at age eight in my home country to earning a GED in America\, my story shows what hard work can accomplish.”

SUMMARY:Jeff Stein: Iowans You Should Know
DESCRIPTION:Iowans You Should Know: Stories from the Iowa Almanac (new in 2021)Did you know that the Eskimo Pie® was invented in Iowa? So was the electric razor\, the clip-on bow tie\, and the self-filling fountain pen. Iowa was also the childhood home of four Academy Award®-winning performers\, and three different Iowa-born musical acts had national #1 pop songs in the 1950s alone. In his presentation “Iowans You Should Know: Stories from the Iowa Almanac”\, broadcaster\, historian and author Jeff Stein tells the stories of the famous and not-so-famous. From elected officials who prevented presidential impeachment\, to record-setting athletes…from famous firsts to displays of strength and grace under pressure…these biographical stories are as inspirational as they are informative. Stories are culled from Stein’s daily “Iowa Almanac” radio segments\, which air on 30 stations across Iowa. The presentation is also specifically tailored for different geographic areas of the state\, to enhance the connection with audiences.

DESCRIPTION:Iowa’s Lost History from the TitanicWhat do an orphan train rider\, a kidnapper\, a missionary\, a wealthy businessman\, a wedding guest\, a betrayed wife\, a farmer and an immigrant recruiter have in common? All had ties to Iowa\, and all were passengers aboard the ill-fated Titanic on the fateful night of April 15\, 1912\, when the famous ocean liner sank. There were a surprising number of first-\, second- and third-class passengers with Iowa connections\, although many of their haunting\, poignant and sometimes shocking tales have nearly faded away. During this spellbinding voyage\, delve into the human drama intertwined with the Titanic epic\, find out who survived and explore the aftershocks that continue to fascinate us more than a century after the Titanic sank.

SUMMARY:Rosa Snyder: Glimpses of Iowa's Capitol
DESCRIPTION:Glimpses of Iowa’s Capitol: Its History\, Art\, Architecture and Restoration \nJoin former state restoration painter\, Rosa Snyder\, as she divulges untold stories and reveals hidden treasures of Iowa’s most recognized landmark. When the building was constructed back in the 1870s-1880s almost every one of the 120 rooms was decorated with intricate designs on the ceilings and walls. Over time many of the motifs were covered with paint. Starting in the 1980s\, it was decided to uncover and recreate these elaborate designs. During this presentation\, several aspects of restoration will be explained in detail: the discovery process\, necessary tools\, varieties of paints\, types of gold leaf and different step-by-step application techniques. Additionally\, a number of before and after photos of several rooms will be revealed and photos of one-of-a-kind artworks created by well-known artists and placed throughout the building shared. The audience will learn about little known historical facts and view photographs of areas not normally seen by visitors.
