SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Hidden in Plain Sight: Iowa’s Remarkable Legacy of Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lakin Library & Envisioning Center on November 17\, 2026\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Hidden in Plain Sight: Iowa’s Remarkable Legacy of Innovation” by Timothy Zarley. \n\n\n\nWhen a young Northwestern law student learned that Timothy Zarley ran a patent law firm in Iowa\, he was skeptical there was enough work to keep the lights on. Minutes later\, walking into a football stadium\, Zarley pointed out Iowa innovation everywhere he looked — the stadium lights from Oskaloosa\, the scoreboard from Des Moines\, the kicking nets\, the knee braces\, even the rules of Arena Football. All Iowa. All patented. All hiding in plain sight. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, patent attorney and Iowa native Timothy Zarley takes audiences on a journey through Iowa’s remarkable and largely unknown legacy of innovation. Drawing on the Iowa Inventors Hall of Fame and decades of patent law experience\, Zarley tells the stories of the Hawkeye State inventors whose ideas changed American life — from the factory floor to the playing field to the kitchen table. Along the way he explores how the patent system works\, why it matters\, and why Iowa has produced far more than its share of the inventions that shaped modern America.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Beyond the Parlor Walls: Iowa Women Who Shaped Their Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join Bricker-Price Block for the Speakers Bureau program “Beyond the Parlor Walls: Iowa Women Who Shaped Their Communities” by author Ann Hanigan Kotz. \n\n\n\nThey were not governors\, lawmakers\, or business leaders; but Iowa women changed their communities in powerful ways. Through women’s clubs\, educational organizations\, and reform movements\, they worked behind the scenes to solve problems\, expand opportunities\, and create institutions that continue to serve Iowans today. \n\n\n\nThis program explores the women who championed education\, built public libraries\, improved civic life\, and transformed their towns. From club meetings held in parlors to statewide movements for progress\, these women demonstrated the power of cooperation and the belief that every community could be made stronger. \n\n\n\nTheir stories reveal a forgotten chapter of Iowa history: how determined women\, often without formal power\, helped build the foundation of the communities we know today.

Together\, the group will build a “Butter” Community. \n\n\n\nThis program coincides with the Art Center’s Pasture to Present exhibit and the display of Red Grooms’ large “Agricultural Building” sculpture\, which includes many nods to the Iowa State Fair — including a sculpture of a butter cow sculptor and butter cow. SUMMARY:Open Book
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Open Book program featuring Yerliana Reyna and Carrie Schurman\, two storytellers who will share personal chapters of their lives and reflect on how our experiences shape who we are and how we connect with the world around us. \n\n\n\nBorn and raised in the Dominican Republic\, Yerliana Reyna moved to the United States as a teenager before settling in Iowa with her family in 2020. Drawing on her experiences navigating different languages\, cultures and life transitions\, Yerliana will share how challenges can become opportunities for growth\, adaptation and self-discovery. Through her story\, she explores the four elements of life—wind\, fire\, water and earth—and how they have helped her find strength\, gratitude and stability along her journey. \n\n\n\nCarrie Schurman grew up on a small family farm outside Lacona\, Iowa\, where driving pick-ups\, four-wheelers and tractors sparked her desire to explore the wider world. After leaving her small-town roots to attend college and pursue a career in education\, Carrie discovered that the values she carried with her could help bridge the rural-urban divide. Now raising two children of her own\, she reflects on how her rural upbringing continues to shape her identity and her appreciation for different perspectives.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Malvern Public Library on January 18\, 2027\, for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Josiah Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa Underground Railroad” by David Connon. \n\n\n\n“Preacher\,” “congressman\,” “negro-stealer”: Josiah Bushnell Grinnell was called all of those things during his life. Grinnell and other Grinnell residents helped at least 37 fugitive slaves who passed through their town before the Civil War. But some residents opposed this work. David Connon will tell a story of racism\, noble actions and conflict. SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Barnstorming Babe
DESCRIPTION:Join the Malvern Public Library on March 16\, 2027 for “Barnstorming Babe\,” a Speakers Bureau presentation by Timothy Grover about a little-known chapter in Iowa’s baseball history. \n\n\n\nAfter defying newly-installed baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis over a ridiculous rule in 1921\, Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel had their $5200 World Series bonus revoked and were suspended for the first six weeks of 1922. That turbulent season ended in a World Series loss\, with Babe only getting two hits in five games. \n\n\n\nRuth and Meusel then headed west on a Great Plains barnstorming tour. Traveling on “jerkwater railroads\,” they played eighteen games in seventeen days across eight different states–with no days off. Stops included Omaha\, Kansas City\, and Denver. Also Tarkio\, Pratt and Drumright. They faced some great small town pitching\, hit monster home runs\, and spent quality time at orphanages. \n\n\n\nTheir first stop was Perry\, Iowa. And after tripling his first time up\, Babe Ruth whiffed on an illegal spitball–and then got his revenge. Three days later in sleety Sleepy Eye\, a young Len Youngman snagged a home run ball and lived to tell about meeting Babe Ruth in a television interview 94 years later… \n\n\n\nLearn about Babe Ruth’s tragic early life\, his time at a Catholic reform school\, his brilliant pitching career with the Boston Red Sox\, and his early years with the New York Yankees. Author Tim Grover also brings a century-old glove\, bat and baseball for show-and-tell. \n\n\n\nHowdy\, Humanities Iowa

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: All Aboard! Relive Iowa's Inspiring Orphan Train Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Join Iowa author and historian Darcy Maulsby at the Prairie City Public Library for a look at Iowa’s orphan train heritage. \n\n\n\nFrom 1854 to 1929\, a network of “orphan trains” relocated as many as 300\,000 children from orphanages in cities like Boston and New York City to at least 39 states. Iowa was among the top states for many of these kids who started new lives in the Midwest and beyond. In fact\, roughly 8\,000 to 10\,000 of these needy children were brought to Iowa to live with both farmers and town residents. For many\, this was a story of second chances\, hope and resilience. Audiences will be touched by the incredible stories of some of these orphan train riders and how their lives evolved after moving to Iowa.
