SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Ukraine 101
DESCRIPTION:Join the Union Public Library for Ukraine 101\, a Speakers Bureau presentation by Danuta Hutchins. \n\n\n\n“I earned a U.S. university PhD in Slavic Languages\, Literature and Linguistics. In view of the barbaric\, unprovoked\, Russian army’s military invasion of Ukraine\, I feel compelled to correct the misinformation Putin has spread about the relationship between Russia and Ukraine through which he justified his genocidal deeds. To that purpose I have reached for my notes\, scholarly papers and publicly available historical sources to compile the essential facts and events that we should know as a background when addressing the current horrifying events of Putin’s war. \n\n\n\nIn Ukraine 101 I am presenting the history and current events in Ukraine\, from the early Rurikids\, the Kyivian Rus’\, the Polish/Lithuanian empire\, the tsarist Russia takeover\, the Soviet suppression of Ukrainian language and culture through the 1991 regaining of freedom from the collapsed Soviet empire\, and the current genocidal war waged by Putin. Arranged chronologically are the main dates and names of significant figures and events. This compilation represents the essence of necessary knowledge to be able to consider and report on Ukraine’s current valiant battle to repel the invaders who are trying to annex and annihilate the land\, the culture and its people.”

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents – Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of the Onawa Library for the Speakers Bureau presentation Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis deeply moving and powerful lecture-recital delves into the extraordinary and often haunting role of music during the Holocaust\, examining repertoire banned by the SS Kulturkammer and what type of music was performed in the camps and ghettos. Through the heartbreaking stories of Jewish composers whose lives were extinguished by the Nazi regime\, Dr. Beard exposes how the Nazis twisted music into a weapon of psychological cruelty\, even as prisoners reclaimed it as a lifeline. In the darkest of circumstances\, music became a fragile sanctuary: an act of courage\, identity\, and resistance against a world intent on erasing them.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau Presents: Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector
DESCRIPTION:Join DeWitt Community Library for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector” by Mary Swander. \n\n\n\nMary Swander will discuss her writing process and the research that went into her new drama called Coop. She will explain object theatre and why she embraced it for this work. She will recount how she got the original idea for the show and the choices she made to bring the story to the stage\, how both the set and the script were an act of discovery. She will also provide background on the Amish and the history of their stance of non-violent resistance throughout their history. The bulk of the play was mainly drawn from fictionalized oral histories from the Kalona area. Swander will discuss her connection to her neighbors and the help they provided\, including the Mennonite quartet who sang the hymns in the show. Audience members may ask questions or relate their own personal or family C.O. experiences.
