An accompanying PowerPoint presentation shows the keelboat and the pirogues with actual photos taken in St. Charles and at the Onawa Lewis and Clark State Park. The audience will be exposed to the many “firsts” that occurred in Iowa\, the true peril of this journey and the return of Lewis and Clark to civilization at journey’s end.

SUMMARY:Chad Timm: Working with the Enemy
DESCRIPTION:Working with the Enemy: German\, Italian and Japanese Prisoners of War in Iowa during the Second World WarAs part of a relatively quiet and under-publicized government program\, thousands of enemy soldiers invaded Iowa in 1943. With the hugely successful 1942 Allied campaign against Adolf Hitler’s vaunted Afrika Corps in North Africa\, the number of enemy prisoners of war (POW) needing interment grew dramatically. Great Britain\, no longer able to accommodate the increasing number of POWs\, looked to the United States for help. Helping with the detainment of enemy POWs made sense\, as American cargo vessels were returning home after delivering war materials with empty hulls. \nWhat began as an experiment in isolated locations in the south and southwest eventually led to more than 500 camps and 400\,000 enemy soldiers interned in the United States\, including two camps in the state of Iowa. Due to a severe shortage of agricultural laborers coupled with increased War Food Administration quotas for farm goods\, Iowa’s farmers needed help doing their part to assist the United States in winning the war. \nThis talk will focus on the creation of two POW camps in Iowa during the Second World War: one in the Northern Iowa town of Algona and one in the Southwestern Iowa town of Clarinda. Some of the topics discussed will be life in a prisoner of war camp\, community relations\, the POW labor program\, branch camps in more than 30 Iowa communities and the arrival of Japanese prisoners at Camp Clarinda in early 1945. Camp Clarinda was one of only two camps in the country to house Japanese soldiers. The story of POW interment in Iowa is a fascinating story of Iowans being confronted by the enemy: an enemy they not only needed to help them meet their wartime goals\, but also challenged them to find their humanity.

DESCRIPTION:Farm Women as Global Citizens: Post-WWII Authority of the “First Lady of the Farm”This presentation draws upon the lifework of Ruth Buxton Sayre\, known during her lifetime as “First Lady of the Farm.” An Iowa native\, Sayre was appointed to President Eisenhower’s agricultural policy committee and served as the president of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW)\, among many civic roles. This presentation illustrates how Sayre had to redefine the accepted characterization of women on farms not only to fulfill her own pursuits as a writer and speaker\, but also to convince farm women that they were not exempt from the responsibility of postwar reconstruction. Sayre’s papers are housed at the State Historical Society of Iowa\, in Iowa City. This project features materials included in the archive.

DESCRIPTION:JJ Singh Kapur\n \nJJ Kapur began his interfaith work in Iowa in high school. He started a youth organization called “The Turbanators\,” which focused on “turban-ating” the negative stigma surrounding Sikhism through awareness building and community service. In 2017\, he became the first turbaned Sikh to win the most prestigious high school speech and debate competition in the U.S.  JJ graduated from Stanford University with Honors and Distinction in Theater and Performance Studies and a minor in Psychology. He returned to his hometown of Des Moines as an AmeriCorps Lead for America Fellow\, where he served with CultureALL to help Iowans build bridges with their diverse neighbors by cultivating a human library across his home state called “Open Book.” JJ is embarking on a new chapter of his life by pursuing a PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Iowa. \n‍ \nJosie Shaw

Food and farming stories have also released some of the best jokes\, tall tales\, and humor in American folklore. Audience members will be encouraged to tell their own stories and discuss their significance.

She never thought her life driving pick-ups\, four-wheelers\, and tractors was unusual until she met “city kids” who hadn’t been behind the wheel of a car until driver’s ed. The confidence she had driving on her family farm mirrored Carrie’s desire to see a wider world; that included moving to Pella to attend Central College\, and then working as an educator for over 20 years in the West Des Moines Community School District. She began her career as an alternative education social studies teacher and currently is the Online Learning Coordinator. She is the parent of two children\, one of whom is learning to drive now. \n \nTone the MoveMaker\n \nTone The MoveMaker is a street hustler from Chicago’s Southside\, who has found his calling as an artist and designer in Mainframe Studios in downtown Des Moines. His mission is to help others turn their struggles into their strengths. In the same way\, he has turned his street knowledge and experience selling cocaine into an innovative brand called “Designed by the Streets.”

DESCRIPTION:Kelsey Bigelow\n \nKelsey Bigelow is a poet and speaker based in Des Moines. She spends her time working as a mental health poet\, sharing this therapeutic tool with audiences of all ages across the world. She is the author of three poetry books and a spoken word album and is published in many journals. As a multi-slam champion\, teaching artist\, workshop leader\, and more\, Kelsey is on a mission to show others two things: 1. You can live the life you dream\, and 2. It does get better. \n \nGabby Guerra\n \nGabby Guerra is a proud immigrant from Santa Ana\, El Salvador. In 2002\, she and her family were forced to immigrate to Iowa due to the violent and impoverished conditions in El Salvador. Gabby grew up in Des Moines and faced many challenges in learning a new language and navigating a different culture. Gabby found support in family\, friends\, and teachers who believed in her potential. She is a proud graduate of the public school system and an alumna of North High School. She attended the University of Iowa as a first-generation student and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Ethics and Public policy\, a minor in Latinx Studies\, and a certificate in Nonprofit Management. Previously\, she was the Director of Youth Engagement at Please Pass the Love\, and she currently serves as Program Director at Al Éxito. \nGabby enjoys giving her time to her community. She was a co-founder and tri-chair for a new community organization\, Iowa Queer Communities of Color Coalition. Gabby completed a fellowship with the Des Moines Chapter of the New Leaders Council and served as Recruitment Director on the Board of Directors. She joined the Iowa Safe Schools Board of Directors in 2021. Currently\, she is a HealthConnect Fellow with the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation. She is a proud small business owner of the residential cleaning business\, L & Co. Cleaning LLC. She is passionate about amplifying youth voices and creating a more inclusive Iowa for immigrants and BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.

DESCRIPTION:Patrick Karemera\n \nPatrick Karemera was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has been fortunate to spend time in several other countries: Uganda\, Kenya\, Tanzania\, Burundi\, and Rwanda. He used his BA degree in Sociology to work with several nonprofits around the continent of Africa. After winning a Diversity Lottery Visa\, Patrick was able to immigrate to Iowa. He now works as a Refugee Resettlement Caseworker in one of Iowa’s largest refugee resettlement agencies. Patrick finds value in himself and connection with others through sharing his story and bringing awareness to the Diversity Lottery Visa process.  \n \nMatthew Kolodziej\n \nMatthew volunteers in his community with a specific passion for serving and building relationships with the unhoused in Des Moines. Adversity has been a big part of his personal story\, and he’s been blessed to overcome some major challenges in his life to become a more productive member of his community. From his own experiences\, Matthew has learned that change begins on the inside and expresses itself outward and upward. Change is a collective experience. Matthew would like to use his personal experiences and education to effectively hold space for others to identify their own adversity and develop the tools to over come them.

She attended the University of Iowa as a first-generation student and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Ethics and Public policy\, a minor in Latinx Studies\, and a certificate in Nonprofit Management. DESCRIPTION:Camp Dodge: Home Away from Home 1917-1918 \nFollowing the U.S. entry into World War I the War Department undertook the task of raising\, training\, equipping and arming a force large enough to successfully contribute the Allied war effort. Camp Dodge\, Iowa\, was selected as one of 16 training camps for draftee soldiers. The small Iowa National Guard camp was expanded into the largest military base in Iowa’s history. the upper Midwest. \nWith a PowerPoint slide show presentation\, viewers will learn how\, from September 1917 through November 1918\, 37\,111 Iowa draftees left cities\, towns and farms to become soldiers during the First World War. Period images\, maps\, letters\, and data will detail how many of many of these Iowans left home for the first time. For these Iowans and other inductees from the upper Midwest\, Camp Dodge became their new “Home Away from Home.”
