SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Suffrage and WWI: The Iowa View
DESCRIPTION:Join Iowa historical fiction author Ann Hanigan Kotz at the Dubuque County Library on October 19 as she explores two transformative periods in Iowa history: the women’s suffrage movement and World War I. \n\n\n\nThe program begins with the story of Iowa’s suffrage movement\, examining the long struggle for women’s right to vote. Ann introduces the leaders who championed the cause\, the events that rallied support\, and the opposition that sought to prevent women from gaining the ballot. \n\n\n\nShe then transitions to World War I\, discussing the war’s far-reaching impact on Iowa communities. Through stories of both well-known and lesser-known Iowa heroes\, Ann reveals the sacrifices and contributions of Iowans during the conflict. She also examines conditions on the home front\, including the fear\, suspicion\, and discrimination faced by many German Americans living in Iowa during the war years. \n\n\n\nThe presentation concludes with a personal connection as Ann shares how her own family was touched by the events of World War I\, bringing this fascinating chapter of history close to home.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Iowans Who Fought Against the Union
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cedar Valley Civil War Roundtable on October 15 for “Iowans Who Fought Against the Union\,” a Speakers Bureau presentation by historian Dave Connon. \n\n\n\nMost Iowans think that the state was solidly pro-Union during the Civil War. After all\, some 76\,500 residents fought for the North. In reality\, Iowa Democrats formed a spectrum of dissent. Most Democrats opposed abolishing slavery (and yet favored the Union war effort); a minority sympathized with the South. It might be surprising that at least 150 Iowa residents served the Confederacy. This talk will focus on four or five of them. David Connon will explore their motivations and describe their pre-war\, war-time\, and post-war experiences. After each soldier’s story\, he will invite audience members to share their observations.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: AI and the Human Future
DESCRIPTION:Join the Huxley Public Library for the Speakers Bureau presentation AI and the Human Future by Scott Samuelson. \n\n\n\nThis presentation focuses on the big moral and political issues surrounding artificial intelligence. What exactly is AI? Can it make our lives and our communities better\, or is it going to take all our jobs and kill us off? Can AI respect privacy\, or is privacy a thing of the past? Who is responsible when AI screws up? Can AI be moral? What does the future of humanity hold as we move through this technological revolution? Neither pro-AI nor anti-AI\, this presentation is intended to get people thinking more deeply about the central issues raised by the new technology and how they might relate to it in their own lives.

SUMMARY:Speakers Bureau: Refuge\, Torture\, and Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lakin Library & Envisioning Center for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Refuge\, Torture\, & Resistance: The Role of Music During the Holocaust” by Dr. Christine Beard. \n\n\n\nThis deeply moving and powerful lecture-recital delves into the extraordinary and often haunting role of music during the Holocaust\, examining repertoire banned by the SS Kulturkammer and what type of music was performed in the camps and ghettos. Through the heartbreaking stories of Jewish composers whose lives were extinguished by the Nazi regime\, Dr. Beard exposes how the Nazis twisted music into a weapon of psychological cruelty\, even as prisoners reclaimed it as a lifeline. In the darkest of circumstances\, music became a fragile sanctuary: an act of courage\, identity\, and resistance against a world intent on erasing them.
