DESCRIPTION:Join the Sanford Museum Association on October 11\, 2026\, for this presentation by Tom Milligan\, offering a peek into J.N. “Ding” Darling’s life. \n\n\n\nIn this 45-minute presentation\, Jay N. “Ding” Darling visits with the audience\, as an old friend\, in his 11th office at The Des Moines Register. Beginning with his early years in Sioux City where as a young boy where he became aware of the natural world around him while developing skills as an editorial cartoonist\, he recalls his remarkable life journey. His story continues to include two Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoons for the Register and a remarkable career as a nationally known conservationist. From the introduction of The Duck Stamp to the creation of the National Wildlife Federation\, Darling’s influence was felt not only through his cartoons but his actions as well. Considered by many to be one of the most important members of the modern conservation movement in the first half of the 20th century\, the impact of his work is still felt today.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Cedar Valley Civil War Roundtable on October 15 for “Iowans Who Fought Against the Union\,” a Speakers Bureau presentation by historian Dave Connon.  \n\n\n\nMost Iowans think that the state was solidly pro-Union during the Civil War. After all\, some 76\,500 residents fought for the North. In reality\, Iowa Democrats formed a spectrum of dissent. Most Democrats opposed abolishing slavery (and yet favored the Union war effort); a minority sympathized with the South. It might be surprising that at least 150 Iowa residents served the Confederacy. This talk will focus on four or five of them. David Connon will explore their motivations and describe their pre-war\, war-time\, and post-war experiences. After each soldier’s story\, he will invite audience members to share their observations.

Join veteran newspaper editor Randy Cauthron for Being Civil in an Uncivil World\, a thoughtful discussion about navigating difficult conversations in an increasingly divided world. \n\n\n\nCauthron spent more than three decades in community journalism\, earning more than 40 Iowa Newspaper Association awards and receiving the organization’s Master Editor-Publisher honor in 2024. Throughout his career\, he has interviewed presidential candidates\, U.S. presidents\, lawmakers\, elected officials\, and—most importantly to him—the people who make their communities go. He has also moderated political forums at both the local and statewide level. \n\n\n\nDrawing on those experiences\, Cauthron will share practical approaches to discussing issues that divide us while maintaining respect for one another. The program will include time for questions and conversation\, offering attendees an opportunity to consider how we can listen\, communicate and engage more thoughtfully—even when we disagree.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Des Moines Intentional Eucharistic Community for the Speakers Bureau presentation “Response to Coop\, the Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector” by Mary Swander. \n\n\n\nMary Swander will discuss her writing process and the research that went into her new drama called Coop. She will explain object theatre and why she embraced it for this work. She will recount how she got the original idea for the show and the choices she made to bring the story to the stage\, how both the set and the script were an act of discovery. She will also provide background on the Amish and the history of their stance of non-violent resistance throughout their history. The bulk of the play was mainly drawn from fictionalized oral histories from the Kalona area. Swander will discuss her connection to her neighbors and the help they provided\, including the Mennonite quartet who sang the hymns in the show. Audience members may ask questions or relate their own personal or family C.O. experiences.

Few realize how many of them ran through Iowa. In this presentation\, baseball historian and author Timothy Zarley reveals the remarkable Iowans who stood at the center of the most turbulent and transformative period in baseball history — the battle between the National and American Leagues that created the game we know today. \n\n\n\nFrom Fred Clarke of Winterset\, who managed the Pittsburgh Pirates to three consecutive pennants while doubters said he was too obtuse to win\, to the Robison brothers of Dubuque who controlled one of the National League’s most powerful franchises\, to an Iowa Senator from Davenport who introduced a bill to hang anyone caught playing baseball on Sunday — Iowa’s fingerprints are all over the early game. Drawing on primary source research from period newspapers and his award-nominated Baseball War Series\, Zarley brings these forgotten figures back to life and connects their stories to the birth of modern baseball.
